The half moon

About us

The Half Moon, Llanthony sits nestled in the heart of the Black Mountains, Wales. The Half Moon is a traditional Welsh Inn, which was originally built as two workmans cottages in the 1700’s, with a natural flagstone floor, a roaring log fire on cold days and cosy seating areas, serving locally sourced food and wonderful ales. B&B is also available and pets are welcomed.

Llanthony is the ideal place to enjoy peace, quiet and tranquillity, go for some gentle walking, do some more serious hiking, mountain biking, horse riding or take a road cycle through the winding and undulating country lanes up to Hay Bluff and the world famous town of books, Hay-on-Wye.

Take a trip to Grwyne Fawr reservoir on foot, by mountain bike or on horse back. The reservoir is located just over the hill in the valley of the Grwyne Fawr which was the site of the murder in 1136 of the Norman Marcher lord Richard de Clare, 1st Earl of Hertford, by the Welsh under Iorwerth ab Owain and his brother Morgan, grandsons of Caradog ap Gruffydd. This resulted in a period of conflict between the Welsh and English in South Wales

When the Grwyne Fawr reservoir was being built the Half Moon Inn was the ‘local’ for the workers (‘Navvies’) - (stone and steam in the black mountains by David Tipper)

At The Half Moon we will offer you a warm and friendly welcome and a place to stop on your travels; whether you are in need of liquid refreshments, nourishment from our selection of traditional pub grub or somewhere to rest your head in our B&B we would be happy to meet you.

NEWS JULY 2015

Lynda and Steve have now moved in as of the of 1st July 2015.
But due to the previous tenant leaving the Half Moon in an extremely poor state, and taking all the furniture - including bar, kitchen and bedroom as well as light fittings we are temporarily closed for business.

We have plenty of lovely people helping out, and anticipate being back in business for the middle of July.
Come August we should be in full swing in our fully refurbished Half Moon.
Please come and pay us a visit and see.

Any accommodation bookings made before 1st July 2015, can you please contact us to check your bookings.
